Cajuns drop final 2 games; ousted from tournament

It was a rough day on the diamond for the Louisiana Cajuns Saturday in the South Zone Tournament at South Harlingen High School.
The Cajuns, an 18-U squad based out of Crowley, blew a 10-1 lead in the winner’s bracket finals and lost a 13-12 heartbreaker to Texas Elite before being eliminated later in the evening by tournament host Harlingen, 8-3.
The Cajuns went 2-and-2 in the tournament.
In Saturday’s first game, the Cajuns scored five runs in the first inning and added five more in the top of the third to take a seemingly comfortable 10-1 advantage.
That was as good as it got for the locals, who struggled to throw strikes from there.
Elite trimmed the lead to 10-6 in the bottom of the frame and then scored seven runs in the fourth to take a 12-10 advantage.
The Cajuns rallied to tie the game in the top of the fifth with two runs but allowed the eventual winning run in the bottom of the frame.
The Cajuns issued nine walks in the game and hit four other batters. That coupled with three critical errors led to seven unearned runs for Texas Elite.
The Cajun, who stranded eight runners, logged seven hits in the loss. Hunter Wrigborg and Josh Youngblood led the offense with a pair of hits each. Youngblood tripled and drove in three runs and Wriborg doubled and had two RBI.
In addition, Macey Hicks singled and drove in three runs; Austin Manuel singled in a run and Nick Zeman had a double. Wyatt Verrett and Christian Stafford also had an RBI each in the loss.
In the final game of the evening, the Cajuns actually out-hit the Texas Stars 10-8 but stranded 12 runners.
Nick Zeman paced the Cajuns offense with three hits. Wriborg and Alyx Duhon had two hits each and Manuel, Youngblood and Caplan Sorrel finished with one hit each. Sorrel also drove in two runs and Wriborg had one RBI.
The Stars and Elite squared off in the finals on Sunday with the Stars claiming an 11-6 victory to force the If Necessary game.
In that game, Elite punched its ticket to this week’s Palomino World Series in Laredo, Texas, by scoring seven runs in the seventh inning to take a 10-2 victory over the Stars.
