LSUE trio earns All-American honors
Three LSU Eunice softball student-athletes have been given All-American accolades by the NJCAA, the organization announced on Monday.
Jensen Howell continues her award haul with her third first-team All-American nod with Sara Tate also joining on the first squad. 2019 NJCAA Division II National Tournament MVP, Kelci Bodin, was named to the second team.
The NJCAA honored 39 student-athletes on this year’s All-American team through three teams.
Howell capped off a prolific first season in Eunice as the NJCAA Division II National Tournament Most Outstanding Pitcher. The sophomore shined in postseason, posting a 4-0 record with one save that included a 0.23 earned run average. For the season, Howell was 22-3 with a 1.03 ERA, tops nationally, including 173 strikeouts and a .183 batters against average.
Sara Tate was a sparkplug for the Bengals, serving as the lead-off batter. Tate stole a team-high 47 bases which ranked fifth nationally and her five triples were ranked 21st. The Pine Prairie native led LSUE with a .353 average and was also tops in hits (60), runs (64) and at-bats (170). The UT-Tyler commitment also tallied 11 doubles, 8 home runs and 47 RBIs.
The speedster had 12 multi-stolen base games including three on three separate occasions.
Bodin was the main catalyst behind the Bengals’ title run, being named the NJCAA Division II National Tournament MVP after belting a pair of crucial home runs including a grand slam in LSUE's title game victory. The sophomore knocked a solo shot in the team's 2-1 semifinal win against Phoenix, and a week earlier, provided a walk-off home run in extra innings to clinch a berth in the National Tournament.
Bodin held a team's best slugging percentage of .658 to go along with a .325 batting average that included 50 runs, 39 hits, 5 doubles, a triple, 11 home runs and 44 RBIs. The Loreauvillle product was a perfect 25-for-25 in stolen bases.
LSUE has had 22 players all-time receive All-American honors including 20 different first-team designations.
