RAYNE - Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, July 29, 2020, at a 11 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Rayne, for Alex Istre, 87, who died Saturday, July 25, at The Ellington Nursing Home in Rayne.

Interment will be in the St. Joseph Cemetery #2, Mausoleum in Rayne.

Rev. Brent Smith, Pastor of St. Joseph Catholic Church, Rayne, will be the Celebrant of the Funeral Mass and will conduct the funeral services. Fr. Kevin Bordelon and his son-in-law. Deacon Barry LeBlanc. will the Concelebrants.

Alex worked as a motor patrol operator for Rimmer & Garrett and William Brothers for many years. He loved helping cut rice with family and enjoyed riding around talking about the fields of crops. He also had a green thumb and grew a beautiful garden that he shared with family.

Alex "Pappy" will be remembered by his grandchildren for his love of cooking, sharing and teaching them how to prepare his favorite dishes. He will always be remembered for his BBQ rabbit, fig preserves and a gumbo second to none. Pappy always had the best gumbo. To his children he was the greatest man they have ever known.

Survivors include his wife of 67 years, Dorothy Boudreaux Istre of Rayne; four sons, Jeffery Paul Istre and spouse Wanda of Rayne, Kenneth Istre and spouse Andrea of Humble, Texas, Ronnie Joseph Istre of Atlanta, Georgia, and Jerry Istre and spouse Laura of Rayne; one daughter, Josette Renee Istre LeBlanc and spouse Deacon Barry LeBlanc of Rayne; 11 grandchildren and 22 great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his father, Joseph Istre; mother, Eunice Leger Istre; one sister, Cloma Istre Griffin; and three brothers, Eddie Istre, Raymond Istre and Adam Istre.

Pallbearers will be his seven grandsons, Brandon Paul Istre, Corey Neil Istre, Christopher Michael Istre, Jacob Aaron Istre, Trevor Anthony Istre, Kyle Joseph Istre and Brody Scott LeBlanc .

The family requests that visitation be observed in Gossen Funeral Home in Rayne, on Wednesday, July 29, from 8 a.m. until 10:30 a.m.
