Inaugural IRF Rice & Gravy Cook-Off set
For the first time ever, the International Rice Festival will be having a Rice & Gravy Cook-Off to kick-off the Festival Season on Saturday, Sept. 28, at the Wells Fargo Building in Historic Downtown Crowley.
Admission is $5; children ages 6 and under are free. Cold drinks, water, and beer will be available for purchase.
Gates will open to the public at 10:30 a.m. and rice and gravy will be served for 11:30 a.m.
Four-member teams will be competing for bragging rights and first-, second- and third-place prizes. Entry deadline is Monday, Sept. 2.
Gates will open for the team at 7 a.m. for to set up and prepare meat. Teams should provide enough meat to feed 50 people and have their choice of meats — pork, chicken, beef or seafood. No wild game is allowed.
Cooking will start at 7:30 a.m. and must be completed by 11:30 a.m. Each team must prepare six cups of rice on an open flame. The rice will be provided by Cajun Country Rice.
Entry fee is $100 per team.
Prizes will include:
First place: four 10-pound bags of rice, four Rice Festival T-shirts and four VIP tags for Saturday, Oct. 19;
Second place: four 10-pound bags of rice, two festival T-shirts and four VIP tags for Friday, Oct. 18; and
Third place: four 10-pound bags of rice and four VIP tags for Thursday, Oct. 17.
