Plane crashes into tower in Vermilion Parish; pilot killed

KAJN-FM, Crowley radio station knocked off the air; continues Internet broadcasting

One death was reported in a plane crash Friday morning near Kaplan.
According to Vermilion Parish Sheriff Mike Couvillon, the crash occurred off of Rosewood Road, west of Kaplan.
Emergency officials said the crash involved a plane and an old KATC tower.
The tower stood 1,800 feet and was being rented by KAJN-FM radio and the Louisiana Educational Television Authority, which distributes public television programming like LPB.
The tower collapsed, knocking KAJN-FM off the air, according to Barry Thompson, general manager of the Crowley-based Christian radio station.
“God’s grace kept the KAJN transmitter building from being damaged by the falling tower,” Thompson said.
KAJN continues to broadcast on the Internet at KAJN.com.
Arrangements are under way to restore the station’s signal using another tower in the vicinity of the fallen tower, according to Thompson.
The identity of the crash victim was not released by authorities as of pres time.
Couvillon said the National Transportation and Safety Board and the Federal Aviation Administration have been contacted and are handling the investigation.
