Leona Coleman Spell
It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Leona Coleman Spell, who left this world peacefully on March 16, 2025, at the age of 84.
Born on Jan. 7, 1941, in Indian Bayou, Louisiana, Leona lived a life rich in love, family, and faith.
Leona was the cherished daughter of John Henry and Elizabeth Coleman.
She was preceded in death by her beloved brothers, Steve Coleman and Ralph Coleman, as well as her dear sisters, Kathleen Boudreux, Irene Dill, Mazel Hargrave, Leezbird Myers, Melba Labbie, Sable Hollier, and Shirley Fajkus.
The bonds of family were central to her life, and her legacy continues through her three devoted sons: Kenny Wilson and wife Lacey, Jody Spell and partner Wendy, and Troy Spell and wife Julie.
Leona’s heart was filled with joy for her grandchildren, each of whom brought her immense pride: Cade Myers, Tori Spell, Seth Spell, Addison Spell, Corbin Spell, Hunter Lege, Harlie Lege and Hollie Lege. She was also blessed with great-grandchildren Gunner and Ayden Myers, as well as Samantha Hamlett, whose laughter and love added to her vibrant spirit. She is also survived by a sister, Maldes C. Touchet.
Leona’s journey through life was marked by dedication and resilience. With a strong desire for knowledge, she graduated from LSUE with a degree in phlebotomy.
Throughout the 1970s and 1980s, she worked tirelessly, beginning her career in sales at West Brothers Department Store before selling insurance for Magnolia.
In her 50s, she returned to college, showcasing her unyielding determination. She dedicated her later years to serving others at UMC Charity until her retirement, and continued to provide private care for the elderly until her early 80s.
Beyond her professional life, Leona was a beacon of warmth and hospitality. A devoted Catholic, she carried her faith with grace, embodying the spirit of love and kindness. In her kitchen, the aroma of her fantastic Cajun cuisine wafted through the air, inviting family and friends to gather around the table.
Every weekend, Leona delighted in hosting card games, where laughter and joy filled her home. She was known for ensuring that no one ever left her home hungry, and her ability to make everyone feel at home was a true testament to her loving nature.
Leona’s life was filled with the joy of family, the warmth of friendship, and the light of faith. She was married to Willie “Bumber” Spell and had two sons with him. After the passing of her husband, Leona found companionship with her lifelong friend, Horace Pryor, with whom she welcomed her third son, Kenny.
As we bid farewell to Leona Coleman Spell, we take comfort in the special message she left behind:
“I am home in Heaven, dear ones; Oh, so happy and so bright! There is perfect joy and beauty in this everlasting light. All the pain and grief is over, every restless tossing passed; I am now at peace forever, safely home in heaven at last.”
Leona requested to be cremated, with no funeral service. Her family will honor her wishes, privately celebrating her life in their hearts and memories.
Though she has departed from this earthly realm, Leona’s spirit will continue to live on in the hearts of all who knew her. As we grieve her loss, we also celebrate the incredible woman she was, her unwavering love, and the beautiful legacy she leaves behind.
May her soul rest in peace, and may we all strive to carry forward the kindness, love, and strength that she so generously shared with the world.
