CROWLEY - Ernest Eugene Fulton, 86, of Crowley, passed away peacefully on Feb. 23, 2025. He lived the phrase “Work hard. Play hard” as a Navy veteran and Gulf oil rig electrician.
His greatest treasure was his wife of nearly 55 years, Glenda “Pappy” Hebert. They built a life together in Jennings, where they rode life’s highs and lows, raising four strong sons and becoming active grandparents.
When the time came to hang up his work boots, he and Glenda knew retirement wasn’t about slowing down — it was about shifting gears. Together they set off on new adventures, moving to Canyon Lake, Texas, then disappearing in their RV for months at a time. They enjoyed two decades of chasing sunsets and making memories that stretched as far as the highways they traveled.
Gene never knew a stranger — he had a way of making everyone feel welcome, whether they were an old friend or someone he had just met. Although the Fulton house was small, it was often overflowing with family and friends.
There he could be found in his workshop, where his grandchildren would follow him around, proudly saying, “Poppa can fix anything!” And no visit was complete without sweets, the occasional sip of “snake-bite medicine” and swapping stories around the backyard campfire.
After Glenda’s passing, Gene’s spirit dimmed. He is now reunited with her, their son Greg; his parents Maurice Hackleman Fulton and Etta Pearl Parsons; sisters Lola-Marie and Ruby-Karen; and brother Jimmy.
His legacy lives on through the stories told by those who loved him. He is survived by his sisters Janie Turnbull, Sandy Ruble and Maureen Coburn; sons Dwayne (Christine), Sam (Lori), and Stuart (Deena); 11 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
A gathering to honor Gene’s life will be held at St. Lawrence Catholic Church in Raymond, Louisiana, on Saturday, March 1, at 10 a.m. A Rosary will be prayed before the service.
No suits, no sorrow — just good company, cold drinks, and the kind of send-off he’d have wanted.
