Rayne High Lady Wolves fall short in playoffs
RAYNE - In Division III of the 2019 State Volleyball Playoffs, District IV champs Rayne High entered competition in the No. 16 position as the power rankings stated.
With that ranking, the Lady Wolves hosted No. 17-ranked Pearl River the afternoon of Wednesday, Nov. 6, at the RHS north gym.
What looked to be a three and out win for the Lady Wolves quickly turned into a come from behind win for their opponents.
“We came out ready to play the first two games and won them, handily,” stated Rayne High Head Coach Stephanie Garrett following the match.
“I think we relaxed a little too much, lost our rhythm and just couldn’t get it back.”
The final tally of games for the five-game marathon was 14-25, 18-25, 25-16, 25-19, 15-10 for the Pearl River win.
Garrett continued, “They (Pearl River) had a girl that was probably about 6-2 and the first two games she was off, plus we blocked her several times which helped to control her at the net.
“However, in the last three games she found her groove in both the front and back row.
“We have been struggling all year with playing really good at times and then falling into a slump that we just couldn’t shake.
“Not making excuses, but we also had some girls just getting back from injuries and the flu. But, these are no excuses, we just let them have the last three games.”
