With August bringing record-breaking heat and very little rain, it’s no surprise most people’s lawns and flower beds have all but dried up and withered away, but not at 103 Hoyt Avenue. The lawn and border beds of Glen and Janice Leleux offer a visual oasis of color in a parched landscape. Resting at the entrance to the Bayou Bend neighborhood, the Leleux’s home acts as a welcomed sight for all on their way to play a round of golf at the Country Club. As the focal point for the area, it’s easy to see why this beautiful yard has been selected by The Crowley Garden Club to receive the 2023 August award for Garden of the Month.
Having lived there for over 32 years, the Leleuxs have updated and expanded the landscape as we now know it, from adding a corner bed near the driveway to the expansion of an existing bed that now houses the yard’s focal point, a beautiful Japanese maple. In addition to providing height and shade for undergrowth, the maple’s fiery red-orange foliage is a much-welcomed reminder of the changing seasons. Surrounding the maple and spilling over into the stoned borders, spectators can view an array of plants including mounding lantana, plumbago, ShiShi Gashira camellias, liriope of both variegated and non-variegated species, marigolds, trailing blue daze, foxtail ferns, coleus, Indian hawthorns, indigo, Drift roses, dwarf azaleas, a beautiful banana magnolia, and a fragrant sweet olive shrub.
Even if golf is not on your agenda, this lovely yard, created by Janice and Glen Leleux, is worth the drive to Hoyt Avenue. The August Garden of the Month award was presented by Crowley Garden Club Members Meagan Villejoin and Brooke Frey Bouillion.
