Boxing Club Donors Being Falsely Misled By New Scam

Within the past few weeks, Charles Trahan, head coach of the Frog Capital Boxing Club, reports that members of an area boxing organization not associated with the Rayne club have been collecting donations in the name of the Frog Capital Boxing Club.

Fire District seeks $900,000 bond issue

Bonding attorney Jason Akers shared good news with the directors of Fire District No. 9 Monday night regarding bids for its ten-year $900,000 bond issue.
“This is the best bid this year,” said Akers, representing Foley & Judell, L.L.P. of New Orleans.
Of four banks which submitted bids to purchase the bond issue, Sabine State Bank submitted the low bid of 3.18 percent.
Akers estimated the low bid will save the fire district which serves Rayne and surrounding rural areas as much as $40,000 in interest over the 10-year period.

Doctors ask jurors about health funds

“We want to work with you,” a group of doctors and board members associated with American Legion Hospital told four police jurors in an informal session they requested to discuss possible funding of an emergency trauma center before Tuesday night’s Police Jury meeting.
The physicians expressed a desire to enter into a joint venture.
Board members Andy Barousse and Steve Stefanski spoke in unison about efforts to cement a joint venture, even to the point where the hospital might lease or sell property to the Police Jury.

Jurors honor NDHS, long-term workers

Members of the Acadia Parish Police Jury recognized the state championship won by the Notre Dame High School football team and the dedicated service of seven parish workers during their 20-minute meeting Tuesday night
NDHS coach Louis Cook was on hand to accept a congratulatory plaque presented by Jury Vice President Cade Benoit. He thanked the jurors of their appreciation plaque.

State Police to conduct courtesy commercial vehicle inspections here

The Louisiana State Police / MCSAP / TESS / Region II Office will be conducting a courtesy inspection detail on Thursday, March 25.
Courtesy inspections will be held on North Polk Road at LA 35 in Rayne, (I-10 Exit 85 behind the Frog City Travel Plaza) between 8:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. Troopers will conduct “Level 1” inspections on commercial vehicles in accordance with federal inspection standards.
All noted violations will be issued warning notices ONLY and no driver or company will be fined.

Two Mardi Gras masked men rob bank Monday

Acadia Parish Sheriff Wayne Melancon reports at approximately 10:33 a.m. Monday morning his office received a call that the Bank of Commerce in Mermentau had been robbed at gunpoint.
According to Sheriff Melancon, two black males described as being in their 30’s wearing Mardi Gras type mask, black gloves and black hooded jackets entered the bank and demanded money.
Upon exiting the bank the pair left on a motorcycle that was later located just west of Silver Wood in Jeff Davis Parish near the graveyard.
