Private pageant told to cease use of Frog Festival trademark

The directors of the Rayne Chamber of Commerce voted during their board meeting Wednesday, July 1, to rescind permission for a local private pageant organizer to use the “Rayne Frog Festival” registered trademark.
The pageant organizer reportedly used the term “Rayne Frog Festival” in registering her pageant’s trademark in 2003. The Chamber board recently became aware of the pageant trademark when the City of Rayne logo was incorporated into the pageant, an action denied by Mayor Jim Petitjean.
A previous Chamber board granted permission, but members of the present board expressed concern over the fact the private pageant was conducted for profit, while the Chamber maintains a legal, nonprofit status.
The directors decided to consult their attorney and direct him to inform the pageant organizer of their decision.
In other action, Miles Boudreaux reported progress on a combination car show and crawfish cookoff competition he is calling “Wheelin’ & Peelin’. Current plans are to host the dual event in May 2010.
Boudreaux also reported he has replaced Jan Cormier as the Chamber’s representative on the Acadia Parish Tourist Commission.
Frog Festival chairwoman Cheryl McCarty reported that all of the entertainers have been signed for the 2009 festival slated Nov. 12, 13 and 14. Headlining the Saturday night musical performance will be Bad Company.
McCarty also reported she plans to call a festival committee meeting within the next two weeks.
Sponsoring the lunch served prior to the noon meeting was the Rayne Building and Loan Association.
