Locals tabbed to Academic All-State teams

BATON ROUGE – Rayne High’s Myles Pryor and Taylor Venable, along with Notre Dame’s Ryan Leonards, Alex Boulet, Hannah Godeaux and Caroline Stewart head up a group of 12 Acadia Parish student-athletes who were recently recognized by the Louisiana High School Athletic Association.
Pryor and Leonards were both named to the 2009-2010 Academic All-State composite football team while Venable, Boulet, Godeaux and Stewart made the composite team in volleyball. Each of the six athletes were able to maintain a 4.0 grade point average while also performing at a high level in athletics.
To qualify for an All-Academic, All-State team, a student-athlete must have achieved a three-year cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or better and must have been selected for at least one All-District honor. Additionally, each member school principal is afforded the opportunity of nominating at least two academically deserving individuals who did not receive All-District honors.
“We want all of the student-athletes in Louisiana to realize and understand that the educational foundation and values that they receive in our member high schools will be life-lasting and will serve them long after their high school playing days are over,” LHSAA Commissioner, Kenny Henderson stated. “We are convinced that participation in high school sports can serve as an extension of the high school classroom and as after-school laboratory classrooms for students in their present and later lives.”
Pryor and Leonards are joined on the Class AAA team by Rayne’s Christopher Castille (3.6905), and Notre Dame’s Jonathan Berry (3.7272), Joseph Devillier (3.5909) Hunter Stover (3.5714) and Dylan Lormand (3.2608).
Honorable mentions include Rayne’s Tyler Venable (3.7857), and Notre Dame’s Matthew Leleux (3.3191), Robert Lavergne (3.0000), D.J. Welter (3.0454) and Will Leger (3.0000).
Honorable mentions on the Class AAA volleyball team are Rayne’s Kayla Fontenot (3.7500), Annie Simoneaux (3.8095), Erin Savoy (3.8571) and Caitlyn Peltier (3.3810).
“The LHSAA’s scholar-athlete program is designed to stress success in the classroom for those who have been successful in either the playing arena or on the playing field,” said Henderson. “This program serves notice to younger students, athletes and non-athletes alike, that this association stresses the qualities that are important for successful living; in fact, we want the entire state to realize the LHSAA’s commitment to all-around excellence in our schools.
“One thing is certain concerning the academic honors these student-athletes are receiving – they are based on factual information derived from their three-year performance in the classroom.”
