Civil lawsuit filed over shooting

Rayne Police Chief Carroll Stelly and other Acadia Parish lawmen have been named as defendants in a civil lawsuit filed in federal court regarding the shooting and critical wounding of Anthony Campbell.
The civil suit was filed Monday in the U.S. District Court by Henry Lee Malbrough, the father of the new mentally handicapped Campbell.
In October 2009, Campbell was indicted by an Acadia Parish Grand Jury for attempted, first-degree murder in the incident that left him with a; bullet lodged in his skull.
The shooting occurred Feb. 10, 2009, when Campbell attempted to flee from law authorities at his home at West C Street and Malvern Avenue.
During his attempted flight, Campbell struck an Acadia Parish sheriff’s deputy with his vehicle.
Authorities, who had arrived to execute a search warrant, then opened fire on Campbell.
Named as defendants with Chief Stelly are Acadia Parish Sheriff Wayne Melancon, deputies Jackie Boddye and George Brad Ware and officers Christopher Cormier and Joseph Credeur.
The civil lawsuit claims Campbell was parked in the driveway of his home when he was “unexpectedly and violently attacked without provocation” by Boddye, Ware, Cormier, and Credeur.
The suit claims civil rights violations and gross and wanton negligence by the defendants.
